Masterclass Cecília Baranauskas:: Socially Aware Design – Entrepreneurship, Creativity And Social Responsibility In Interactive Technology Design

Internet of Things, Ubiquitous Computing, Wearable Computing, Social Software, Ambient Assisted Living, and Smart Cities are examples of how interactive technology permeates every aspect of people’s lives. Questions and challenges, such as the neutrality of technology, the techno-dependency, the possible approaches and understanding for context etc., have been emphasized. The myth of the average user is confronted with plurality and diversity; the focus on the ‘use’ is challenged by the effects and concerns of the ‘non-use’; social, cultural, and emotional elements, that were usually left on the margin of approaches to design technology now require a central attention. The task of designing interactive technology has, therefore, assumed new dimensions in terms of complexity of the new organized behavior and required a wider and deeper understanding of the ethical and social responsibilities of those who create them.

In this hands-on workshop the attendees will be invited to clarify the problem of creating an application for the Internet of Things domain, considering the possibility of launching it as the product of a start-up. In the process, the participants will be guided in the use of some artifacts to organize ideas and the search for solutions. The participants will be introduced to the Socially-aware approach to Design, its foundation and practices. This approach to design has proved to be both applied and research-oriented, allowing design to be an innovative, highly creative and cross-disciplinary tool responsive to the true needs of society. Practical artifacts and methods will be presented and experienced by the participants in a design problem, and the results will be socialized and discussed between the participants.

M. Cecilia C. Baranauskas is a full Professor at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP). She received the ACM Rigo Award (2010) for her lifetime contribution to the Design of Communication field. She is one of the authors of the very first book of HCI in Portuguese, has leading several projects in the context of e-Citizenship and e-Inclusion, and has advised more than 40 Master’s dissertations and PhD theses. Her research interests have focused on HCI issues, particularly investigating different formalisms (including Organizational Semiotics and Participatory Design) in the analysis, design and evaluation of societal systems.

Masterclass Marcelo Pimenta:: Computer Music is from Mars, HCI is from Venus (?!?): How can we use the knowledge of an area in the other?

HCI and Computer Music are multidisciplinary areas, involving theories, techniques, models, tools, concepts and principles for using technology to support activities where human factors are fundamental. In recent years they both have formed very cohesive communities. Even though the integration between them seems natural and obvious to many, the reality is not yet. In this short course, we will introduce to the HCI community some concepts of Music Computing and discuss how we can apply the knowledge of one area into the other, illustrating that with examples and demonstrations.

Prof. Marcelo Pimenta is a full Professor at Institute of Informatics (INF) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) where he is the Head of Laboratório de Computação Musical (LCM) – the Computer Music lab. He is a member of a multidisciplinary research group at INF/UFRGS working with topics in Human-Computer Interaction, Software Engineering and Computer Music with an emphasis in the integration of these areas. He was president of the Computer Music Special Committee of the Brazilian Computing Society from 2009 to 2011 and from 2011 to 2013. He is the editor of the book Ubiquitous Music published in 2014 by Springer.
